The principles of risk management become a new international standard

ISO 31000 became an international standard on 14th November 2009. Its title is “Risk management – Principles and guidelines”. It is a fairly concise document, the main content is just 24 pages.

That’s right; we have brushed the dust off of the old webcam and microphone to make a short Youtube video about Risk Management. Exciting times, I know. Now don’t get me wrong, we are not expecting an Oscar anytime soon, but hopefully the “Short Guide to Risk Management” will help you understand just a few of the basics in the Risk Management Field.

The video focuses on introducing the subject at a very basic level, outlining what Risk Management is and the benefits of Risk Management. The second part of the video looks at the individual stages of Risk Management and a brief overview of how to conduct each stage.

What’s our motivation for this?

Springwater Software has started to develop a new software tool for Risk Management. There are many “Enterprise Risk Management” software packages available, but our product is going to be slightly different. We are aiming our software at smaller organisations and people whose involvement in risk management is a small part of their busy worklife, not their main everyday focus.

A lot of the web pages about Risk Management make it seem more complicated than it actually is. So one of our objectives is to help people get started by explaining Risk Management in plain English and keeping it simple.

Another of our objectives is to learn more about Risk Management ourselves, so we can develop a better software product. Writing the content for this website has helped us to clarify our thoughts about risk management. We hope that people will give us feedback, enabling us to learn together about what works.

There are many definitions of the phrase “risk management”. Over the coming months we will using this website to set out some of our thoughts on the subject.

The aims of risk management are:

to reduce the likelihood of undesirable things happening
to minimise the negative impact of undesirable things if they do happen
to increase the likelihood of desirable things happening
to maximise the positive impact of desirable things when they do happen

Risk management is a process. Carrying out that process makes it more likely that an organisation will achieve its objectives.
